Exciting New Arrivals
Discover our latest digital book products: Three Books by Dr. Gerald A. Spencer "Cosmetology in the Negro," "Medical Symphony," and "Your Hair and You." Spencer was born in St. Lucia and studied at the College of the City of New York before earning a medical degree in 1932 from the University of Lyon, France. European medical schools were more accommodating to students of African descent. During his residency at the Skin and Cancer Hospital in New York, he also visited Harlem Hospital as a visiting dermatologist. A referee described him as "a man of excellent character, scholarly and profound," after he became a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine in 1942. His classic research in Cosmetology, as seen in works such as 'Cosmetology in the Negro', 'Your Hair and You', and 'Medical Symphony', advanced the understanding of African American hair, skin, and genetics, and influenced subsequent studies in dermatology and related fields. In addition to Dr. Spencer's works, 'A Ghetto Girl's Dream' (Revised and Updated) a dream without interruption of a deeply personal journey of resilience, transformation and hope, where struggle meets purpose and a dream refuses to die. 'America Talking: Black and White' opens the door to honest dialogue, confronting race, identity, and the realities of Black and White America with courage and truth, challenges the mind through bold, necessary conversations, written by Dr. Ada Sherrill.
